What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?

I have a problem with an elderly relative who could be harmed by ingesting products containing alcohol, obviously we will try to make sure no dangerous substances are around but we wondered if this meant that alcohol was removed ? (Please note this is a serious question, no jokes or abuse please ! ) Thanks !What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?
That means they have added a poisonous substance to ethyl alcohol that would otherwise be drinkable. The alcohol is still there and the other ingredient (like wood alcohol) is there also.

Serious alcoholics would try to drink denatured alcohol even though they could go blind from that drink. What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?
That means denatured alcohol. See links below for additional information. It would be poison if ingested.
It is short for denatured alcohol.

Denatured alcohol is ethanol to which poisonous and foul-tasting chemicals have been added to make it unfit for drinking. There is more than one recipe for denaturing alcohol; some add methanol or isopropanol, some gasoline, and so on.
That stands for denatured alcohol.
alcohol is not removed only other product added, this is usually done with food products, example, vanilla flavour if you add vanillan it is no longer ';pure'; ethanol it is usually done for excise (duty\tax) reasons, if it is denatured it cant be drunk as an alcoholic drink

yep Davy B it does cook off, the alcohol is just the carrier

same way perfume/ fragrance ';cooks off'; it just leaves the fragrance

i agree sherry trifle Mmmmmm more please
Denatured alcohol means it is not for consumption. I think this is usually accomplished by adding methyl alcohol which is poisonous.
That means denatured alcohol. What they do is make the alcohol undrinkable to avoid certain types of people (small kids and drunks) doing damage to themselves - they do this by adding a chemical called Denatonium Benzoate which is the most bitter tasting substance known.

It only takes a tiny amount added to pure ethanol to make it incredibly foul tasting and undrinkable.
Denatured alcohol is alcohol that has been made non-consumable by adding toxic alcohol to it to keep someone from drinking it. If enough of it is consumed it can be deadly and there is no way to make it non toxic, before it is drank or after.
Denatured alcohol is methylated spirits (but without the mauve dye). It's harmful for anyone to swig cosmetics whether they are old or not.
denatured alcohol is something that oxygen was removed from
nzcrusty has a good point but any alcohol added to cakes etc will probably largely cook off. But sherry trifle now that's a different matter!

Which stores have the best prices on perfumes and cosmetics with a large variety?

That depends on whether or not you know what you want. If you have a Sephora store at your local mall, you are in luck, as they have an incredible selection and good prices. If not, you can check out the fragrances at your local department store (I really like Nordstrom and Neimann-Marcus for perfume counters!) and then order online at www.sephora.com. What I like about Sephora is that they have a lot of fragrances that you just cannot find at local department stores, however, if you don't have one locally, you can't test them before buying, a serious drawback.

A place with good prices, but limited selection and no testing, is Sam's Club. Their prices are about the lowest I have found for designer fragrances, but they do not allow testing, and they have very few to choose from.

Happy shopping!Which stores have the best prices on perfumes and cosmetics with a large variety?
Drugstores are definitely the cheapest, but often they don't have good quality. If you want something in the middle try Ulta. They have amazing colors and brand names, plus it's affordable.Which stores have the best prices on perfumes and cosmetics with a large variety?
Drugstores, seriously.

  • How do I know if the perfume (and sometimes cosmetic) is expired? ?

Very often I cant find the production info (Manufactured date and expired date) on the perfume bottle. How should I know if the perfume/cosmetic is still usable? How do I know if the perfume (and sometimes cosmetic) is expired? ?
Well the thing is that these products don't come with an expiration date on them..... Cosmetics, if it smells bad or burns throw it out. Mascara goes bad first, but other stuff can last forever as long as it's kept clean. With perfumes, they last about 3 years after they are made. If it seems like it's been sitting on a shelf and is dusty.. don't buy it. It's best to buy from Sephora since they always send you new bottles. If the perfume debuted this year, it was made this year. Often websites will tell you when it was made and since then, most companies make more. That is only a copyright. How do I know if the perfume (and sometimes cosmetic) is expired? ?
Cosmetics companies say you should change your cosmetics every six months. As for perfume, just go for how it smells, when it smells a bit pungent then get a new one.

EDIT As long as you buy perfume from a reputable shop, you don't have to worry. Its illegal for them to put expired items out. its only if you buy it from a market stall etc that its likely to be dodgy (and fake!)
` the scent sometimes is a good idea
if it doesn't have the expiration date on it, don't buy it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's safer !!!

    Hi,

My mum usually shops at Chinatown - People's Park Complex, 3rd storey, Ley Wah; Ang Mo Kio Central, Blk 720, #01-4104, Red Tomatoes. She also found some cheap cosmetics at City Square, Johor Bahru. Can also try out Holiday Plaza at Johor Bahru if you don't mind taking a taxi there for RM 7 (but don't ask the taxi drivers for the price, just state RM 6 and they'll usually ask for RM 7)

    Hope this helps.

Cosmetics, perfumes,a pampering week-end at a health farm or perfume??

Ok girls..I'm setting aside 拢300 to 拢400 on girly Christmas presents for the females that I know.

Its gets harder and harder to choose things for them each year...anything original or unique ideas coming from you ladies out there????Cosmetics, perfumes,a pampering week-end at a health farm or perfume??
all that sounds really great, but how about gifts with a conscience? you know - maybe a tote bag from Breast cancer research - or something from the RED DRESS ( heart smart ). these are issues that we all as women have to seriously address - so if you want these gifts this year to really mean something rather than some brainless foo foo - truly love them with the gifts, with the message of preventive health and you will be contributing to good causesCosmetics, perfumes,a pampering week-end at a health farm or perfume??
I wish you were my friend!

Have you tried Space NK - their own range of products are lovely.

Also Aveda do fabulous hair products. The various colours in the Malva range are brilliant and you could buy according to your friends' hair colours.

Or - what about vouchers for a nail bar?

Im travelling to usa by airplane. Are cosmetics/perfume allowed in my luggage?

pack liquids in your luggage, not carry on. The TSA is very strict about liquids in carry ons. small bottles of liquid are permitted in 1 zip lock sandwich bag.

don't try to bring more liquid than you need. I've seen people buy liquid cleansers, etc. in duty free and then have to throw it out! good luck.Im travelling to usa by airplane. Are cosmetics/perfume allowed in my luggage?
Yea, just throw it in ur luggage. They wont no its in there as long as its not metal so who cares and if they do check u wat are they gonna say? NO PERFUME ALLOWED? lol they should be american and us americans have a fk it attitude so dont worry like i said just throw it along with all ur other luggageIm travelling to usa by airplane. Are cosmetics/perfume allowed in my luggage?
Yes, in checked baggage. They are restricted to small sizes for carry-ons (like a tube of lipstick is okay but a bottle of perfume over 1 ounce is not). I find it's best to put all that stuff in a plastic bag and pack it in your checked suitcase.

I'm going to Croatia on Sat for a week & I want to buy some perfume & cosmetics; Cheaper there or Duty Free?

price up what you like in the duty free shop on your inbound flight here and in croatia, then look about when your there but watch out for copiesI'm going to Croatia on Sat for a week %26amp; I want to buy some perfume %26amp; cosmetics; Cheaper there or Duty Free?
Definitely cheaper there but more difficult to find, don't buy from your hotel is the only advice I can give you!I'm going to Croatia on Sat for a week %26amp; I want to buy some perfume %26amp; cosmetics; Cheaper there or Duty Free?
Every time I have traveled, the duty free stores are more expensive than in the city itself. I don't know where they get off saying it is cheaper. It may be convenient but that is all.

  • Does Fedex Ship Cosmetics and Perfume Purchases?

I'm buying some cosmetics and perfume from amazon.com, and I just wanted to make sure that Fedex ships them.

And, yes, i checked the the FedEx prohibited goods list, but I can't get anything specific out of it.

Thanks in advance.Does Fedex Ship Cosmetics and Perfume Purchases?
I just ordered a cologne from fragrancex.com and FedEx is the shipper, so yea they do.

Do you or not ask for the little ';perfume samples'; when you buy cosmetics ?

I had to buy a gift for a friend and the lady at the Lancome counter was somehow ';eager'; to give me those little samples. I had to ask for them since I love to try out new things ! LOL !!Do you or not ask for the little ';perfume samples'; when you buy cosmetics ?
    I LOVE those things.

They are just the right size for a single application to add a certain sensual and heady variety of alluring aromas to romantic occasions like anniversaries and those special cosy nights spent at home around a crackling log fire.

Not too close though, Roxanne, my last inflatable friend, looked like a pregnant hippopotamus with a dorsal fin and udders when I woke next morning on the fur rug.

    PS.

Joking....I just hoped to make you laugh.

    I don't really have a fur rug.

.Do you or not ask for the little ';perfume samples'; when you buy cosmetics ?
I do ask in Bloomingdales sometimes. Since they want you to spend your money on a freaking lipstick that cost 25 dollars, it is more than fair, that they promote their products wisely ! I think most of the times, the girls behind the counter, take those little samples home anyway ! Each perfume costs like 70 dollars the small bottle so why can't they just hand out the samples ? Good for you for asking them !
hahaa arent those samples usually self-serve? cant you just go up and spritz for yourself? hahaa, whenever i walk into macys, most of the time, the ladies just stop right in front of you, and hand you a perfume sample ^^ i just sniff and toss.
I stopped asking for the samples when I realized that they did nothing to cover-up the stench of my 132 critters ....
I was at Sax Fifth , and I asked for Aqua velva and got snubbed

Does anybody remember Ginger perfume by Cosmetics-To-Go?

I've been trying to get hold of some, but I don't think it's made any more. Is it possible to get it anywhere or is there another similar one on the market. It was my absolute fave perfume. I've tried the internet, but nothing's come up.Does anybody remember Ginger perfume by Cosmetics-To-Go?
Cosmetics-to-go is the original version of lush, the people who started lush created cosmetics-to-go first and then it evolved into 'Lush', and now its well known world wide for enviromentally and animal friendly, fantastic products . The ginger perfume used to be also in cosmetics-to-go, then it was sold in lush, but the discontinued it- but, now they`ve brought back a new 'retro' line of all the old products that people wanted back! You can`t get it in the stores, there`s only a small selection of retro stuff in the shops- but you can buy it online at www.lush.co.uk, or just type lush uk into google and click on the first option, you`ll find the ginger perfume in the fragrance section thats under 'retro'( 2nd from last in the line of stuff at the top). Theres also a 'ginger' body lotion to match! like you have been missing my old favourite- 'ginger' perfume- its so warm and unique! And i was so glad that they decided to bring it back! Hope this helped! :D

How much cosmetics makeup, perfume, creams etc can i bring from ireland to england on aer lingus?

ok this is my job telling people what you can bring through security at the airport.

I know this is 4 weeks old but I'm gonna tell you anyway.

If you have any liquids / creams / pastes / gels they have to be put in a plastic bags that is 20cm x 20cm, thats 1 litres space.

They have to be under 100mls in size. If they are above that you can't take it through security.

1 litre bag should be plenty. You don't need to put any make up thats not liquid in it - so no eye shadows, compact etc - just mascaras, lipgloss (lipstick is a solid) moisturizers.

Its not an aer lingus thing, its an airport security thing as set down by the EU.

It easiest if you have them in a bag before you come. Dublin airport charges 鈧? for 2 plastic bags so its best to bring your own.

If you have any questions ask any security staff at the aiport or customer service agents (in the pink t-shirts)

Your hand luggage will be restricted to 10kg weight and any liquids taken on board will have to be less than 100ml. If you are referring to purchasing cosmetics from the duty free areas then you can purchase an unlimited amount providing your total hand luggage does not come to more than 10kg. And all purchases must be for personal consumption or application, i.e. you are not allowed to purchase items and then sell them on once you get to England. How much cosmetics makeup, perfume, creams etc can i bring from ireland to england on aer lingus?
Well if your bringing the beauty products in your suitcase, it just has to weigh under 20 kgs but if you want to bring them in your hand luggage you have to have less than 100mls with you.
Your suitcase must be 20 kilos or under. Aside from pressurised spray cans, you can bring over whatever you can fit in this suitcase, as long as the whole lot weighs 20 kilos or less.
Whatever you can cake on your face.

  • Am I allowed to take cosmetics and perfume in my hand luggage?

Am I allowed to take any cosmetics in my hand luggage e.g. eyeliner, blusher or any perfume?Am I allowed to take cosmetics and perfume in my hand luggage?
This is the info I was given by Thomsons prior to my flight in December and as far as I am aware this still stands.

The liquids must be in individual container(s) no larger than 100 millilitres (3.5 fluid oz) and must be carried within one transparent re-sealable or zip-top plastic bag with a capacity not exceeding 20cm x 20cm or 8 inches x 8 inches or one litre capacity. Customers will be responsible for providing their own resealable bag.

The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably and be easily visible. The contents must not be packed on top of each other and the bag must be completely closed.

The plastic bag must be removed from hand baggage, prior to the airport security search point as it will be screened separately.

Any customers with liquids in containers of more than 100ml or who are unable to meet the detailed restrictions will be required to pack them in their hold baggage.Am I allowed to take cosmetics and perfume in my hand luggage?
sadly you wont be allowed to take your own stuff on the plane. unless you buy perfume, cosmetics at the airport shops or duty free. they will be put into a clear bag so the airport checkers know u purchased them at the airport
I flew last month and I wasn't allowed perfume or lip balm. Powdered make-up was ok though.
i am just back from spain and you cannot take cosmetics in hand luggage,i also know someone who had bought new make up expensive stuff and had it in there hand luggage and it was taken of them so i wouldnt chance it.
for perfume, 30 ml -travel size
I live in Spain and fly back and forth a lot. I find there are no set rules and it very much depends on the airline. i.e easyjet are pretty laid back and i took all my make up with me last time, although some airlines won't even allow a lipstick. Best bet is to phone the airline before hand. You can take on anything you buy in duty free.
I flew last month, and i didnt risk taking perfume or any other liquid, even lip balm in my hand luggage. I was allowed face powder though!
Call your travel agent or the Airline you are scheduled to depart with. They will let you know EXACTLY what is OK and not ok.
aslong as your stuff is under 100ml
I travelled to Marbella in May and thought it was OK to take this stuff in my hand luggage including a deodrant, hairspray and a sun cream.......

Every item was confiscated in cluding a brand new mascara! I was gutted!!!

    Don't take the chance hun
I got caught with this and got all my MAC make up taken off me, I was nearly crying!! You can only take 100ml containers in a small clear plastic bag (they give you these as you go through the security check) beware they will take powders off you too. To play safe I would stick everything in your hold suitcase. The last time I travelled I only took a lip gloss and very small hand cream in my hand luggage x
The following is a guide to the security requirements for all passengers departing from UK airports and also provides some advice that will help passengers pass through the security search point as quickly as possible.

    Key Points to remember:

Each passenger is restricted to carrying only one item of cabin baggage through the airport search point with a maximum size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage.

Where possible, put all liquid items in your hold baggage. This includes water and other drinks, creams, sprays, pastes and gels.

CHECK WITH AIRLINE TO BE SAFE
Are yr liquids, aerosols and gels 100ml or less? those are include items such as drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lipstick, lip balm and similar substances. if the items are greater than 100ml., place them in yr check-in baggage. if each item is 100ml. or less fit in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag maximum capacity not exceeding one litre and only one bag per person is allowed.

I have the same skin condition as Michael Jackson and I don't use a cream, that's just a waste of time and effort. Instead, the dermatologist can ';paint'; you with a chemical that destroys the melanin (or skin color agent that makes you darker) and you just appear ';pink'; or white depending on what your true color is. Mine is a healthy pink. I'm not about to waste my life spending hour after hour in front of a mirror trying to reach places and hope I get them. And I doubt someone like he would either. Just go to a dermatologist and get it over with if its that bad.

Now that I'm painted, no one can tell I've ever had it. I just have to stay out of the sun because I can never tan, it just burns and peels. I'll never ';brown'; again.

You have all the key words needed to do a detailed search - use any advance search (i.e. google, dog pile, etc)

    In the search all words: ';quality control, chemist, cosmetic';

    You will find things as:

    Responsibilities:

    1. Formulate from concept to finish

    2. Duplicate prototype

    3. Understand each ingredient function and use

    4. Understand regulatory requirements and perform CTFA search

    5. Interact closely with Marketing and customers to develop formulas

    6. Test product performance

    7. Troubleshoot scale-up issues

    8. Supervise pilot and first three production batches

    Chemist Responsibilities:

    - Analytical chemistry testing on raw materials

    - Operate all lab instruments to perform analytical test methods, troubleshoot problems with instruments.

    - Drug Stability Program and active testing on OTC drug products.

Of course - individual companies will have their own set of requirements. You could also search of some of the big csometic companies to see what type of chemistry they do.

Another source of information is the American Society for Quality (ASQ) 800-248-1946 or http://www.asq.org

If you call them, ask for a contact person with the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Division. Contact that person and they can direct you to a lot of information.

The ASQ also has a number of professional certification exams - one of the top level exams is the ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE). It is clear why some cosmetic manufactures do NOT test on animals? But what is the reason for one's that Do?

The same reason medical companies test new drugs on animals- To make them safe for human use. Things such as lipsticks, shamoo, conditioner, moisturisers and other kinds of make up can cause severe damage to humans if not tested properly, and however controversial the issue is, it is legal and a safe way to make sure that these products are not going to kill most people. It is clear why some cosmetic manufactures do NOT test on animals? But what is the reason for one's that Do?
Because there are some sadistic people out there who never outgrew the snipping legs off daddy long legs at various lengths just to see what happens stage. They wanted to be able to torture animals on a larger level...legally. I am not a huge animal rights activist but some of these things they are doing to animals is completely uncalled for...all in the name of beauty!

It is clear why some cosmetic manufactures do NOT test on animals? But what is the reason for one's that Do?
My guess would be that because many cosmetics consist of petroleum compounds, the companies would test for toxicity before applying the product to humans.

MAC is now completely owned by the Estee Lauder corporation. It was started by two guys who little by little sold the interest to Estee Lauder. This is how most businesses begin, and when they are successful they catch the eye of major companies. You need to do a lot of research on this topic. Maybe you can speak to someone who works in marketing. You will probably have to put out a lot of money to get it off the ground. You will need to have an extraordinary product because this market is very competitive. But remember, all of the major companies start off small. Good luck.Who manufactures M.A.C. cosmetics line?

Are we really a vain society? Do we really have a more-than-normal pride in our appearance? To answer that, you’d have to define normal. There’s nothing wrong with being vain, as long as we don’t get carried away with it. We just want to look good – to look our best. And people have been working hard at looking their best for centuries. And that’s why cosmetics has such a long history. We’d like to take you through the history of cosmetics here; and let’s just see how similar we are to people living in 10,000 BC.

Ancient Egyptians had a full line of cosmetics

Have you ever seen pictures of the Ancient Egyptians, with their painted faces? They look very striking, don’t they? Very classic. And that was the intent. It was extremely important to them that they looked and smelled good, because the old expression “cleanliness is next to Godliness” is that old – they believed it very strongly.

The Egyptians were very spiritual people, and believed their appearance was directly related to their level of spirituality. And so they needed to find ways to make themselves look at least presentable, if not fabulous.

The Egyptians were also very resourceful people. Some of the things they came up with were very innovative, even by today’s standards. And cosmetics was one of those things. They had a knack for developing natural formulas to solve their skin challenges. Would you believe that around the fifteenth to the tenth centuries BC, they had cosmetic products that would get rid of stretch marks, shrink wrinkles, get rid of scars, and make hair grow?

That’s amazing, when you look at the line of products that’ll do those same jobs today. And today, we seem to need all kinds of research and development programs to come up with the same thing. Perhaps there’s something to be said for natural cosmetics after all.

Some of the other cosmetics the Ancient Egyptians used were eye makeup, face creams and body oils, as well as a wide array of perfumes and fragrances.

The Egyptians really knew how to mix ingredients

All these cosmetics that the Egyptians used had to come from somewhere. Well, it’s the old story of “necessity is the mother of invention”. Because there was so much emphasis on looking good, Egyptian women had to find a way to do it. And one of the things they came up with was something called mesdemet.

Mesdemet was made of copper and lead ore – not the safest thing to be constantly putting on your face, but it did the job. They applied green to their lower eyelids, then black or dark gray to their eyelashes and upper eyelids. And keeping with their spiritual beliefs, the dark colors were designed not only to enhance their appearance, but to ward off evil eyes.

And an evil eye wasn’t the only thing mesdemet warded off. It was a great disinfectant, as well as an insect repellant. And with life on the Nile being fairly filled with annoying insects, the eye makeup performed a dual purpose. So the combinations of ingredients that made up their cosmetics, were very diverse. In fact, many were used for all kinds of medicinal purposes, too.

Now how’s this for a combination: burnt almonds, oxidized copper, a couple of different-colored copper ores, lead, ash, and ochre. They called it kohl, and it came out as a dark-colored powder, which was applied with a small stick, on and around the eyes, in an almond shape. Then, to complement the fancy eye makeup, they applied a mixture of red clay and water to their lips and cheeks. And the nails weren’t left out, either. They used henna to dye them orange or yellow. Quite a colorful picture, don’t you think? But that’s exactly what they wanted back then – something like today, perhaps?

And the Egyptians weren’t good at just putting together natural products. Some research done by L’Oreal, along with scientists from the Louvre in Paris, revealed that the black eye makeup used back then had ingredients that had to have been chemically made, because a natural origin couldn’t be found. The research also showed that mesdemet got its creamy smoothness from its 7-10% fat content. That’s just the same as many of the eye cosmetic products on the market today. Are we really advanced, or just living in the past?

The purpose of cosmetics hasn’t really changed over the years

Way back – I mean, way back – like in 10,000 BC, cosmetics were used to enhance the beauty of the female countenance. And by the way, men used them, too. Back then, all Egyptians bathed either in the river or from a basin at home. They used cosmetic cleansers made from vegetable or animal oil mixed with powdered lime and perfume – probably not much different from some of the soaps we use today.

Also, the air was very hot and dry in those days and the people needed something to keep their skin soft. So they used one of a number of perfumed oils to protect themselves from the climate.

As time progressed, through invasions and migrations, cultures merged, and that had a profound effect on the value of cosmetics. Remember, the Egyptians held a strong connection between their cosmetic makeup and their spirituality. However, when the much more liberal Greeks moved in, ideas about cosmetics changed. The actual use of cosmetics didn’t decrease at all, but their connection with spirituality did.

The Greeks use of cosmetics was predominantly – well, cosmetic. They were still interested in looking good, but not for the gods – for each other. So they adopted the Egyptian cosmetic practices and products.

But then, centuries later, the Romans moved in, with their life of frivolity and debauchery. The Egyptians’ cosmetic formulas were used for even less spiritual purposes, like aphrodisiacs. However, vanity was still an issue, so cosmetics still had a place on the face – and on the rest of the body, too. It was said by one Roman, a man named Platus, that “a woman without paint is like food without salt.”

The Romans’ lifestyle definitely had no boundaries, and that included the source of their cosmetics. For example, they used fat from a sheep, mixed with blood, for nail polish. And they left no doubt as to their priorities in life when they took baths in mud, mixed with crocodile excrement. Yuck!

The pale face was the norm for centuries

Through many centuries, a pale face was the desired look because it defined your place in society. It was recognized that those who worked in the fields had tanned and rugged skin. They were the working class, not to be associated with the upper refined class, who had white skin. Those with pale skin were the ones who had enough money that they didn’t need to work.

And to achieve that look, women and men used a powder made of hydroxide, carbonate, and lead oxide. Unfortunately, there was a price to pay for looking “proper” – lead poisoning. That’s why an alternative was sought. And they found it, in the 19th century – a facial powder made of zinc oxide. And that’s what they still use today.

As the cosmetic industry moved into Hollywood in the 20th century, the white face look was gradually replaced by the tanned look. And that became the source of a whole new line of cosmetic products – artificial tanners. In 1929, there were ads running for tanning liquid and powder. If you couldn’t get a tan naturally, then you could still have bronze skin with tanning aids.

Cosmetics are used for that younger look

During the Edwardian society days, around 1900, middle-aged women did a lot of entertaining. And as hostesses, they had to look their best, which to them, meant looking as young as possible. These society women needed all the help they could get to offset the effects of their high lifestyles. They didn’t eat very healthy foods, and they didn’t exercise, plus the air pollution was heavy at that time. To “preserve their youth” and make up for their extravagant lifestyles, Edwardian women relied on cosmetics, especially face creams and anti-ageing products.

Another way women got themselves to look naturally young and attractive was to go to the beauty salon. One of the most famous of those salons was the House of Cyclax in London. Because the women didn’t want people to know that they needed help to look beautiful, they sneaked in the back door of the salon. Their carriages would pull up in the laneway, they’d quickly hop out, wearing a veil to hide their complexions, and scurry in the back door.

Mrs. Henning, the owner of the House of Cyclax, discreetly sold face creams and rouge to the ladies. One of her products, papier poudre, was a colored-powdered paper that the women pressed on their faces to remove the shine. The pieces of paper came in books, and you can still buy them today; one company that sells them is Avon. As well as the papier poudre, the women used the charcoal on the end of burned matches for mascara, and flower petals for lipstick. Now those are natural cosmetics!

Another beauty salon owner, Helena Rubenstein, found herself very busy with her upper-class clients. Women with disposable income were willing to spend a lot of money on their appearance. Helena Rubenstein started out with a face cream that protected the women from the sun, and later added lipstick and face powder. Today, there’s a full line of cosmetics available from Helena Rubenstein.

The cosmetics industry takes off in the 20th century

As the popularity of beauty salons increased, in the beginning of the 20th century, the cosmetics industry became established – and it’s never looked back. Starting with a salon called Selfridges, which opened in 1909 in London, cosmetics were no longer hidden under the counter, but were sold on the open market. Women became more confident, and didn’t worry as much about what others thought – as long as they looked good.

If you can think of makeup application as an art, then perhaps you’ll understand that one of the biggest influences on the cosmetic industry was actually the performing arts – ballet, to be specific. When the Russian Ballet came to London, a designer named Paul Poiret took the Russian style and created a whole new look – a much more colorful look. And that look was reflected in cosmetics, not just clothing.

Now those society hostesses didn’t have to make all those trips to the beauty salon. They now had permanent cosmetics at their disposal. They could have their lips, cheeks and eyebrows tattooed, with vivid color that didn’t fade and didn’t have to be replaced. Permanent cosmetics are fairly popular today, too.

As the years wore on, cosmetic use came and went. During the 1930s, lipstick was dark red, with an ever-changing array of shades. But that was bad news for the philanderers – the dark lipstick left a distinct stain, and many wives were looking for explanations for the “lipstick on the collar”. At the same time, fingernails followed suit with the lipstick, with their dark crimson colors. But that was contrasted by the lighter pink of the toenails.

Around World War II, the use of cosmetics dwindled a bit because of shortages of ingredients to make them. But as soon as the war was over, people started spending money again. Now women could buy all the makeup they wanted. And the competition was heating up, too.

The cosmetics industry becomes the foundation of fashion

Throughout the last few decades, women’s choices of cosmetics greatly increased. There were many companies selling many kinds of makeup. Cosmetics now included eye makeup, like mascara, eye shadow and eye liner; facial cleansing systems, including cleanser, toner and moisturizer; nail polish, every color and design you can think of; lotions, lipsticks, skincare products, powders – the list goes on and on. Perhaps that’s why cosmetics is a multi-billion dollar industry today.

There are so many players in the cosmetics game now, like Colosé, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Mac Cosmetics, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Avon, Clinique, L’Oreal, Bobbi Brown cosmetics, Victoria Jackson cosmetics – everybody’s getting into the picture with their own lines.

And the winner of this cosmetic game is you, the consumer. Whatever type of look you want, whether it’s to cover up, emphasize, illuminate, minimize, enhance or perfect – any look you want can be had with the help of today’s cosmetics.

Cosmetics are products that sell, even when there’s a recession. Women will always find the money for their makeup. And the men don’t mind. After all, they’re the ones who benefit from those good looks. They’re the ones who’ve appreciated the efforts that women have gone to throughout the years, to make themselves “presentable”.

So, men, look back and thank the ancient Egyptians for their sometimes “weird” formulas they used to enhance the beauty of their women. Many of their ideas have lived through the ages. And now you get to enjoy those ideas as they’ve culminated into the cosmetics of today. And all you can do is greet your special lady, with her perfectly-applied cosmetics, and say, “Wow!”

Get in touch with the office of the Registrar of Patents and Trade Marks in your state for the purpose. You should rather avail the services of a professional doing such registration work as the procedure and formalities involved are cumbersome.I am going to establish a new firm of mine in which I'll manufacture the cosmetics.?
It depends what country you are in. Most countries have trade mark offices (ie. USPTO in USA and UK Intellectual Property Office). You'll need a search conducted to find out if anyone else is using the mark you plan too. The UK Office offers this service - I don't know about other places. Ususally I'd recommend getting an attorney (even though they can be quite expensive) because they will cover searches, all the forms for registering and deal with any objections that might be raised - things can get quite complicated! But it is possible to deal with things yourself to save costs (at least it is in England - I don't know for sure about other places). Anyway - hope this helps.

Do I need a permit to manufacture cosmetics in Illinois?

YES -- Cosmetics Manufacturing requires a permit. This includes filling containers as well as the more traditional manufacturing activities such as mixing ingredients together. If any of your cosmetic products are also considered drugs, you also need an OTC manufacturer鈥檚 permit. A person that only labels or changes the labeling of a cosmetic but does not open the container sealed by the manufacturer of the product does not need this permit. You must register all of your products with the Bureau Statewide Pharmaceutical Services. This permittee must have written policies and procedures.

What degree enables you to work in the manufacture of cosmetics in any big cosmetic company?

    chemistry

What kind of qualifications do you need to engineer/manufacture cosmetics and skin care?

The closest I was thinking would be a chemical engineering degree? I can't seem to find out exactly what qualifications I'd need to be doing that. So far I've just been looking into chemical engineering.

Im in my final year of high school and I take - calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry, and physics.

So technically, I should be able to get into whatever course is required?

Does anyone know where I should be looking? Our schools career advisor couldnt even tell me.What kind of qualifications do you need to engineer/manufacture cosmetics and skin care?
Hm. Chemical engineering sounds about right, or perhaps chemistry. I would apply to college with one of those as your intended major, and then talk to the career advisors at the college you are attending. They are usually much more informative than high school advisors.

That sounds like a very interesting field of work to enter! Best of luck to you!

  • Jane. Cosmetics reviews?

I've been looking for a cheap/ good makeup brand to buy and my freind recommended jane. cosmetics? has anyone tried this brand or can you recommend another one? Thanks (:

oh and btw, i'm looking for eyeshadow, eyeliners, and possibly other things :D thanksJane. Cosmetics reviews?
Jane is actually pretty good! I like their eyeshadows (some are very similar to more expensive brands), and the blushing cheeks blush are pretty pigmented. I haven't tried all of the line, but I can definitely recommend those products. However, I noticed that they are being pulled from a lot of the drugstores in my town. You might have to hurry and search for them while the brand is still around (they might be going buh-bye).

Alternative for eyeshadow: Wet 'n Wild shadows--- the really large palette of shadows. It's pretty pigmented, and you get a lot of colors in one item all for $6 or so...

Another favorite cheapie: NYX -found online, in ULTA, and in some drugstores. The single eyeshadows are pretty amazing.

    As for the no-no's:

Wet 'n wild eyeliner- it is .99 but the stuff smudges very easily.Jane. Cosmetics reviews?
I like the face powders and bronzer sometimes but thats about it. Try Milani, covergirl for shadows and like the other person said NYX, they have great color selection and payoff. L'oreal, rimmel and maybelline for lipsticks. and prestige has awesome liners.

Eye shadow as liner, and anyone use Jane cosmetics?

when using shadow does it look the same? i heard that black shaow looks better than black liner, and does anyoen know if Jane tests on animalsEye shadow as liner, and anyone use Jane cosmetics?
jane cosmetics does not test on animals.... now for the shadow as a liner... It looks great for both smokey and DARK looks. If you want a smokey look you can use the shadow as your liner but if you want a black line not just a mokey line you can wet your brush and then use your shadow on the wet brush which is a great way to make the color stand out. Not all eyeshadows can be used as eyeliner thought. Your best bet is using a color that you know looks just as good off the pot as it does in it. Also, using pencil eyeliner and placing black eyeshadow on topof it can help you keep that lied look all day!!

Good luck finding your own individual look!!!!Eye shadow as liner, and anyone use Jane cosmetics?
Jane does not test on animals. Eye shadow can look better if you put it on with an eye liner brush! It looks very smokey :]
I usually use shadow as liner...no it doesnt look the same...*mineral make up does tho* but it looks softer and smoother.

*get the brush moist before dipping it in the shadow*

I used to use Jane when I was like 14..cant really find it anymore. And Im not sure if they test on animals

For the price you pay, yes.

    +

Their selection compliments almost any skin tone, because most of the colors are neutral or light pastels.

    -

You don't get the long lasting wear that a more expensive brand would give you (Think Chanel, Benefit, M.A.C.)

There are three wonderful products that I'll start off with:

Jane's Blushing Cheeks blush is one of the best things I've ever found. It goes on sheer at first, but you can layer it for a more dramatic look, and it doesn't cause drying or breakouts.

There is also a new tinted moisturizer out called Nearly Foundation. It comes in a tube and is lightly whipped, it works wonders for my face, especially since it's summer.

Nearly Foundation is light coverage, and it gives my skin a summery gorgeous glow. It gives your skin a believable dewy complexion, instead of a fake matte that most powders are famous.

Jane does have a new mineral selection which is very smooth and light on your skin, and again does not cause breakouts or oil problems. It's called Be Pure mineral makeup. Mineral makeup is the next big thing, even though it's been around for years because mainstream cosmetics companies are finally seeing that there is a profit to it, since most the minerals are so easy on your skin. Definitely give these a try.

Onto the so-so products. Depending on how much of a sale your store is having, try some of these:

Jane eyeshadows are pretty, but they do not have long staying power by themselves. However, if you use them wet, they stay for anywhere between a good six and eight hours.

Their Eye Zing shadows stay the longest. There is a black shadow called Clubbing which is wonderful, wearable, and layerable as well. There are hints of silver glimmer in it, and it's not messy like some black shadows can be. It is also not an overpowering black, though it may seem so when you look into the shadow pot. Most of Jane's products are layerable and this shadow is the same. Based on how you apply it you can create the perfect smoky eye using this one color alone. It's perfect for a romantic dinner date or an evening movie.

The lip products are probably a no-go except for the Megabites collection. They don't have a super long staying power either, but they taste good, and you can use lip sealant or gloss to make them stay longer.

    Hope I've helped (:

At the regular price, I would save that money and go spend it on Maybelline.

has anyone tried it? what did you think of it?Jane cosmetics Mineral Lip Balm?
I've tried it...it sucks. I hate drugstore brands, but recently, I was in a play and the make-up designers lost all of their lip glosses and lip balms that were from Clinique, Chanel, and Dior...they ran to Walgreens for lip balm, got the Jane one, and put it on me. It sucks. It made my lips feel so oily. YUCK.

They used to sell this at a local medspa in my area. The dermatologist who owns the place decided to discontinue selling it. Some of the girls who work there told me it was about the same as all the other mineral makeups, but it was pricier because the company tries to place the makeup for sale in more upscale locations like spas, dermatologist's offices, etc. (of course you can find it in other places). I tried some lip products because they were half off and they were ok, definitely nothing to write home about.

Is Jane Cosmetics a good eyeliner brand?

I just wanted to know. I saw it at a drugstore and I needed new eyeliner but I don't know if i should of bought it or not. If you don't think this is a good brand of eyeliner then tell me what you think is a good drugstore eyeliner. Is Jane Cosmetics a good eyeliner brand?
I purchased a Jane twistable eyeliner one time at Walgreen's. I normally favored one that Cover Girl made but this one particular day Walgreen's happened to be out of the shade I normally use. I was in a hurry, I had actually left work to run over there and grab some new contact lens solution. I needed eyeliner desperately, my lenses were irritating me, eyeliner was running everywhere, and my Cover Girl pencil ran out that same morning. It was a bad day! So I found myself staring at the Jane display and they just happened to have a very similar shade to the one I used from Cover Girl. I bought it. It was amazing... it went on even smoother than the CG pencil and lasted longer... and the shade was prettier (I use a charcoal grey... but sometimes they seem too black). I really loved it and went it ran out I went back for more... however I have not been able to find this product again, like it's been discontinued or Walgreen's just hasn't carried it. I have been very disappointed because it really was a good one.Is Jane Cosmetics a good eyeliner brand?
I would consider giving Jane a try. Perhaps you can purchase the eyeliner at a drugstore such as Rite-Aid that has a money-back guarantee on cosmetics. I've always liked Jane's mascaras, eye shadows, blushers, lispticks, and loose and pressed powders. Jane was originally owned by Estee Lauder, so IMHO the quality has always been good. And I'm 50 years old, so I've tried quite a few brands.
If it's not well known, I suggest you to not buy it. You don't want to risk getting any bad chemicals near your eye. Stick to en eyeliner you know works well.

I have been using MAC cosmetics for a couple months now. I want to try thier skincare, is it any good?

I have been using MAC cosmetics for a couple months now. As long as I stick to thier warm colors the makeup looks pretty natural and not as dramatic and the artists faces lead you to believe. I went in there and asked for a natural look and that is exactly what I wanted and I am pleased with. I wanted to try some of thier skincare, but I am not sure since they are mainly a good cosmetics line. Is the skincare any good or should I venture elsewhere for my skincare regim. Mind you I am 15 weeks pregnant with twins, and my skin has gone dry on me (it is normally combination), and I used to use Clinique for skincare, but it broke me out. I cannot use Estee Lauder for skincare as it breaks me out too. I guess I could use MAC skincare, but since I have never used it before I wanted opinions before I drop my cash on the product. Thanks!!I have been using MAC cosmetics for a couple months now. I want to try thier skincare, is it any good?
personally i dont MAC skincare products to be that great, esp for the price. but then again there are other women out there who swear by it. i think it all depends on what your exact skincare needs are and stuff. i have oily skin that tends to be dry and is acne prone. i use dermatologist prescribed cleaner but use nutrogena moisturizer. some things that i did like from their skincare collection though are: microfinish exfoliating cream and strobe cream. i also have their oil based make up remover which does a GREAT job and doesn't even break out my acne prone skin. but for the others you should read some reviews. try makeupalley.com and specktra.net :)

  • Why Are These Expensive, Quality Skincare products and Cosmetics Being Sold For So Cheap?

I love quality skincare and I found these sites among others, that offer really expensive skincare products for nearly half the price!? I called the rosejoyce people to ask ';what's the catch'; and laughed and said that there wasn't one; however I'm still skeptical. Do you all think its legit?

I ordered some peptox serum at rosejoyce for $26 that sold at Bee royal cosmetics for 65$!

I also buy dermalogica from whatgreatskin for alsmost 30 dollars less than a salon tried to charge me!

    these are the sites:

    http://www.rosejoyce.com/

http://www.whatgreatskin.com/Why Are These Expensive, Quality Skincare products and Cosmetics Being Sold For So Cheap?
Yes, it is legit. Most everything can be found cheaper online, if you look hard enough. Just like TJMaxx and Ross can sell the same suit you buy in a Mall store for half the price, these websites buy quantity wholesale of an item and don't mark it up as much. You may also want to check on eBay and amazon for your favorite items. The only suggestion I would have is to make sure the items shelf date is still good. Sometimes mass quantities are sold cheaply when an item is near it's expiration date. But, other than that, I would certainly recommend that you SAVE your money for other enjoyments and buy where you get the best price on the item you want.

I don't shop on the websites you named, but have shopped all over the Internet to find what I want at a price I want to pay. I have been delighted so far, with many many purchases. Those websites sell more, so they don't have to make the 200% mark up that a salon has to make to pay for overhead. Why Are These Expensive, Quality Skincare products and Cosmetics Being Sold For So Cheap?
I hate it when this happens to innocent people. You said they even laughed at you for asking what the catch is. This should have thrown up the red flags! That is usually peoples first instinct when cornered with a lie.
Ofcourse theyr not gonna tell you what the catch is, they just want you to make that transaction! If you want the real thing, get it from a reputable source, or even better, from the real source! Holer!
It is a total scam, because what happens with company's like this rose joyce they buy close out merchandise and expired product. I would not trust it because unless you truly get it from the name brand source its duped.

You can buy fake very realistic Prada purses from Internet companies such as infinitelooks.com and they are replicas.

I would never trust anything that says its a name brand unless it comes from the originating company. Sorry but you were scammed.
After looking over their site (rosejoyce), I doubt they have the buying power to buy huge quantities. It looks cheaply done and as others have stated, they sell animal products. I would have to agree that they are buyiong old stock!

If their prices were a little closer to the bee royal prices then I would say, it's fair market pricing. So at those prices it's either outdated products or knockoffs.
I would think that either the products are expired or close to expiration or this company has enough money to buy a huge lot of the products to cut the cost.
Did it occur that maybe they can sell it that cheap because maybe it's old stock that other retailers have sold off to them or because they sell other items like animal minerals, or whatever, so they can lower their prices by that much. I work for a department store than can sell products cheaper than competitors because we have the buying power to do so and we have a variety of products of all price ranges that brings in the revenue.

Bee Royal Cosmetics (don't sell to Australia as far as I know so I'm just presuming) probably don't sell as many products as rose joyce and are forced to raise their prices to cover their costs and still be profitable or they consider themselves to be a premium or prestige brand and can sell products at a higher price because it donates status and quality. I wouldn't be so quick to call it a scam!!

If rose joyce sell the products that are the latest stock not just rebought and slightly outdated stock then as a customer your laughing, but I have my doubts that your getting the same quality!!
Girl you know there messing with you $26 thats hallarius its just a scam DONT BELIVE EVERYTHING YOU SEE ON THE COMPUTER! but why do you think its so cheap? Mabey ask Rose Joyce if you could have a sample first. Good luck!
I would rather spend the extra cash and know that I am getting the real thing. Than take the chance and get some knockoff and pay with my skin!
They even sell horse and dog vitamins at Rose Joyce! Yeah that don't sound right. They even have one of those cheap looking web-site that people throw up over night.

I mean animal vitamins with high end cosmetics?

whatgreatskin also looks like one of those fly by night Internet scams. I wouldn't give them my money but hey it's your money and if you want to risk it go ahead.

I mean really. How can they sell a $65 product for $26. That can't be real. That's like someone telling you they have a $65,000 Cadillac on sale for $26,000. That ain't happenin'.

Which do you prefer MAC or Prescriptives for Cosmetics and Skincare?

I was wanting to purchase a nice pretty look for my vacation, %26amp; I wanted something natural, pretty %26amp; would bring out my skintone. It can be hit or miss with me though when it comes to foundation as I am really fair with WARM not COOL undertones, the pain of being Puerto Rican/Italian/German/Irish! I have the dark hair, with blue eyes %26amp; warm creamy skintone. I have tried many lines %26amp; all seem abit off when it comes to my foundation. If I can find one that would work then I would stick with it. I see that Prescriptives has a good selection of colors when it comes to foundation %26amp; MAC has its NC %26amp; NW range to work with. I know I have golden undertones so I want to try one of these lines. Does anybody have some experiance with either of these brands of cosmetics %26amp; if so please give me your opinion. NO other line suggestions though as I have indeed TRIED them ALL, from the mineral foundations which DO NOT work for me, to Aveda which I am allergic, to Estee Lauder the mother brand!Which do you prefer MAC or Prescriptives for Cosmetics and Skincare?
my color was best matched at MAC.

when the sales associate matches your color make sure you move around to different lighting or if possible ask if you can step outside to check the coverage. in the past i've tried on foundation that looked good in the store under the light, but once i stepped outside in sunlight it didn't match my skin tone. but MAC has a lot of colors to match you.Which do you prefer MAC or Prescriptives for Cosmetics and Skincare?
    MAC IS THE BEST!

Anyways, Mac is the best Cosmetics I ever used.

    For Skincare:

I have sensitive skin so I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.

    Hope this helps =)
    MAC
ive tried both and have had better luck at matching my color @ MAC.
I think you should chose MAC becaues even though it is a little expensive it's worth the money because it last a long time and they have great colors.
Presciptives has good lipsticks, but everything else by them feels like grease, MAC is the best, the absolute best, their foundations, eyeshadows, eyeliners, lipstick/gloss, concealers, powder, blusher, bronzer! The skin care is pretty good, the green gel cleanser and stuff is good, as is strobe cream, but if you tend to be oilier, their moisturizer are a bit too rich,
MAC is the best in my opinion, match yourself though sometimes those makeup artists aren't good with matching (but they can point you in the right direction), use your cheek at your jawline or the inside of your wrist on the side between where you get sun and where you don't.
