What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?

I have a problem with an elderly relative who could be harmed by ingesting products containing alcohol, obviously we will try to make sure no dangerous substances are around but we wondered if this meant that alcohol was removed ? (Please note this is a serious question, no jokes or abuse please ! ) Thanks !What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?
That means they have added a poisonous substance to ethyl alcohol that would otherwise be drinkable. The alcohol is still there and the other ingredient (like wood alcohol) is there also.

Serious alcoholics would try to drink denatured alcohol even though they could go blind from that drink. What does 'alcohol denat.' mean, as listed as an ingredient on perfumes and cosmetics ?
That means denatured alcohol. See links below for additional information. It would be poison if ingested.
It is short for denatured alcohol.

Denatured alcohol is ethanol to which poisonous and foul-tasting chemicals have been added to make it unfit for drinking. There is more than one recipe for denaturing alcohol; some add methanol or isopropanol, some gasoline, and so on.
That stands for denatured alcohol.
alcohol is not removed only other product added, this is usually done with food products, example, vanilla flavour if you add vanillan it is no longer ';pure'; ethanol it is usually done for excise (duty\tax) reasons, if it is denatured it cant be drunk as an alcoholic drink

yep Davy B it does cook off, the alcohol is just the carrier

same way perfume/ fragrance ';cooks off'; it just leaves the fragrance

i agree sherry trifle Mmmmmm more please
Denatured alcohol means it is not for consumption. I think this is usually accomplished by adding methyl alcohol which is poisonous.
That means denatured alcohol. What they do is make the alcohol undrinkable to avoid certain types of people (small kids and drunks) doing damage to themselves - they do this by adding a chemical called Denatonium Benzoate which is the most bitter tasting substance known.

It only takes a tiny amount added to pure ethanol to make it incredibly foul tasting and undrinkable.
Denatured alcohol is alcohol that has been made non-consumable by adding toxic alcohol to it to keep someone from drinking it. If enough of it is consumed it can be deadly and there is no way to make it non toxic, before it is drank or after.
Denatured alcohol is methylated spirits (but without the mauve dye). It's harmful for anyone to swig cosmetics whether they are old or not.
denatured alcohol is something that oxygen was removed from
nzcrusty has a good point but any alcohol added to cakes etc will probably largely cook off. But sherry trifle now that's a different matter!
